Trout UK
Trout farming in the UK has a rich history dating back to the 1950s, when a Danish entrepreneur introduced the practice to the country. Today, there are almost 290 trout farms in the UK, with the majority located in central and southern Scotland, south England, and North Yorkshire.
Trout Farming Methods in the UK
Pen farming: Trout are raised in pens or enclosures in freshwater lakes or rivers, or in their marine phase, in pens at sea.
Flow-through systems: Trout farms with a continuous flow of water through the ponds or raceways, which helps to maintain water quality and reduce disease risk.
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS): Trout farms that use RAS technology to recycle water and minimize waste, often used in indoor or semi-indoor facilities.
Types of Farmed Trout
Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): Introduced from North America, this species is the most widely farmed in the UK, due to its adaptability to the UK climate and farming systems.
Brown Trout (Salmo trutta): Indigenous to the UK, this species is also farmed, although to a lesser extent than Rainbow Trout.
The UK trout farming industry has grown significantly since its inception, with annual production reaching around 17,000 tonnes. The majority of this production is destined for the table market, with a smaller portion going towards stocking rivers for recreational fishing.
