Salmon Chile
Salmon farming is a major economic driver in Chile, ranking as the country's second-largest export sector after copper and the top supplier of farmed salmon to the United States, with approximately 50% of U.S. salmon imports coming from Chile. The industry, which began in the 1970s and has since expanded into Patagonia's pristine fjords, generated $6.4 billion in exports in 2024 and supports around 86,000 jobs directly or indirectly. The industry is concentrated in southern Chile, particularly in the Los Lagos, Aysén, and Magallanes regions, with over 1,300 active salmon farms as of the end of 2024. Chilean salmon farming is highly efficient, with a feed conversion ratio of 1.2-1.5 pounds of feed per pound of salmon, making it more sustainable than terrestrial protein production.
